Fish should be fed according to their species or type (ie. Catfish diets for Catfish, Tilapia diets for Tilapia or other Cichlids types, Koi and Goldfish diets for Koi and Goldfish, etc.) However, there are various multi-species diets such as Star Milling’s 35% Pond Diet which is nutritionally balanced for a wide range of species from Catfish to Bass, depending on the pond environment and developmental stage of the fish.

Feed a pellet size that will meet the size requirement of your average fish size. Extruded floating pellets will soften in the water, allowing smaller fish to nibble off small pieces of food.

Feed an amount your fish will readily consume within 20-30 minutes. The amount of feed should equal about 3-5% of the body weight per day. For increased growth for fish that are less than six inches, feed small amounts three to four times per day. Place feed in several places around your pond or tank system to allow lesser aggressive fish a chance to eat. Dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and water quality should be considered before feeding. For best water quality, remove any unconsumed food.

Extruded floating pellets will allow you to watch your fishes’ activity, general health, and performance. In addition, the extrusion process allows the pellets to maintain water stability for longer periods of time.

Steam sinking pellets are preferred by those who have a predator problem such as birds or raccoons, windy areas, or during cooler water temperatures when fish are more likely to stay at the bottom. Steam sinking pellets will not maintain water stability for as long a period as the extruded pellet, and one must be aware of possible water quality issues caused by overfeeding.

It is recommended that you purchase the amount of feed that will be used in 60 days or less. Store your feed in a well-ventilated, dry area, protected from rodents and insects. All shrink wrap should be removed promptly from packaging. Feed should not be in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Excessive heat for long periods of time will cause oxidation, rancidity, and deterioration of the vitamins and nutrients. Feed should never be frozen.

Required by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the Guaranteed Analysis provides a product’s nutritional content. This valuable information assists pet owners, retailers, and veterinarians with making decisions about product selection and feeding amounts.
